‘Fruit of Gods’ jamuns control high blood pressure, diabetes, are anti-cancerous, and much more

The Hush Post: Jamun, the dark purple berry which has a relatively short season, is a native of the Indian subcontinent. Also called black plum, with a sweet and sour flavour, its nutritional value is more than its size can pack in. It has a significant amount of Vitamin C, iron, magnesium, vitamins, and dietary fibre, potassium and water. In India, Jamun is referred to as the ‘Fruit of Gods’.

Jamuns have moderate amount of calories, roughly 75 per cup, small amounts of protein and a minimal amount of fat with zero cholesterol.


Jamuns help in lowering high blood pressure. These berries contain notable levels of potassium, which is a vasodilator and reduces risk of atherosclerosis and heart attack.

Jamun seeds are laden with anti-diabetic properties. According to Diabetic Living India, “extracts of the bark, seeds and leaves of jamun have been found to cause a marked, prolonged decrease in blood sugar and glycouria (sugar in urine).” Diabetics should include jamuns in their  diet as they significantly enhances insulin activity. Jamuns, when combined with cinnamon, can be excellent for controlling surging blood sugar levels.

Large amount of Vitamin C and antioxidants in this fruit stimulates the production of white blood cells and increases immunity.

Some of its constituents help in production of haemoglobin, so more oxygen and nutrients reach the body

The high fibre content satiates the stomach and optimises digestion, so helps in weight loss.

Bark powder mixed with water is effective in curing tapeworm infection.

Jamuns are anti-cancerous. This fruit has several bioactive phytochemicals that include polyphenols, which contain anthocyanin known to fight cancer cells. Anthocyanins, flavonoids, ellagic acid and gallic acid present in jamuns have the capacity to prevent carcinogenesis in organs.

Jamun juice helps in natural bowel movement.

Jamun juice is a natural astringent used as a mouthwash. Pulp of jamuns is used as a treatment for gingivitis (bleeding gums). In some Asian countries, leaves of jamun tree are burnt to form ash which is rubbed on teeth to strengthen them.

Regular intake of jambul stimulates healthy liver function

Medicinally, the benefits of jamun can be taken in any form- raw, as a juice, in the form of an extract (from the bark, leaves, and seeds), the juice can be used in salads, desserts and in fruit juices and smoothies.

Seeds of jamun are used by Ayurvedic practitioners, herbalists and traditional healers in various formulations.

When not to eat 

Can adversely affect people if they have fever, or they are suffering from respiratory problems, hypoglycemia or have blood clots as it is a clotting agent. The best way out is to eat it in moderation.
