The Hush Post: Widow of a Kargil martyr died at a private hospital at Sonepat in Haryana after the medical staff allegedly refused to admit her for not carrying her Aadhaar card. Shakuntala Devi (55), widow of Kargil war martyr Havaldar Laxman Dass, who was suffering from a heart problem was taken to the Tulip Multispeciality Hospital, Sonepat, by her son after the Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) Hospital in Sonepat gave her the referral slip.
“At the hospital counter, the authorities asked me to give the Aadhaar card of my ailing mother to admit her for treatment. I told them that I have forgotten it and will get it soon from my home. I requested them to start the treatment, but they insisted on providing the Aadhaar card first,” her son Pawan Kumar Balyan, a resident of Mahlana village in Sonepat, told news agency PTI over phone.
After about half-an-hour of argument with the hospital authorities, he left the place, he said, adding that the hospital authorities also called up the police and asked me not to create a scene in the hospital premises. “I brought my mother back to ECHS Sonepat where she died the same evening,” Balyan said.
Meanwhile, the private hospital said they insist on Aadhaar cards, but denied the allegations that they were not ready to admit Devi.
Deputy Commissioner KM Pandurang on Saturday ordered an inquiry into the matter to be conducted by the civil surgeon. Minister Anil Vij said a Health Department team has been sent to Sonepat to collect the details of the incident.
