‘Yeh dil mange more’ an ad jingle became synonymous with Capt Vikram Batra 20 years ago. His identical twin, banker Vishal Batra ‘Luv’ would not have thought that he would have to represent ‘Kush’, Capt Batra’s nickname, for the rest of his life.
On Sunday, Vishal Batra will be there atop the 16,000-foot-high Himalayan peak to mark his brother’s death anniversary, exactly 20 years later.
“I am going to ‘meet’ my brother, up there,” Vishal said, while speaking to The Tribune just hours before he boarded a flight en route to Drass.
Vishal will be heli-dropped to reach Point 4875 (altitude of the peak in metres), now known as ‘Batra top’. Captain Vikram Batra,Biopic,Sidharth Malhotra“I had the option of climbing the peak, but the Army advised acclimatisation of at least one week, which was not possible due to time constraints,” says Vishal, who is based in Chandigarh.
At Point 4875, Capt Batra had led the assault by his ‘paltan’, 13 JAKRIF, to make Pakistan army soldiers vacate the post. Capt Batra had killed four Pakistani soldiers in a combat and captured Point 5140. He had called up his Commanding Officer and radioed the victory code: Yeh Dil Mange More.
Capt Batra’s Commanding officer (CO) then, Vir Chakra rcipient Lt Col YK Joshi (now Lt General) will accompany Vishal to the Batra post . Point 5140, the highest occupied point on Tololing ridge, was captured on June 20,1999. A climbing expedition of 13 JAKRIF will reach the peak on the same day after few days of trekking.
In September this year, Capt Batra, a Param Vir Chakra recipient, would have turned 45.
