Himachal soldier killed as army post hit by avalanche in J&K

A soldier from Kangra was killed and another critically injured in an avalanche. The avalanche hit a forward post of 40 RR at KK Galki area in Saujiyan sector of Poonch near the Line of Control (LoC) at 4 am on Thursday morning.

It is the first death of a soldier this year. He has been identified as Lance Naik Sapan Mehra of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. The injured soldier has been identified as Sepoy Harpreet Singh who belongs to Punjab.

Lance Naik Sapan Mehra died on the spot. Sepoy Harpreet Singh was taken to an army health facility for treatment.

An official told IANS that the soldiers were trapped in the avalanche, but were taken out in an immediate rescue operation.

In January 2017, as many as 20 soldiers had died in avalanches in Gurez and Machchal sectors.
