The Hush Post: Forty-five people, including 35 IIT students, have gone missing in Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. All these students are from IIT Roorkie.
The group had gone for a trek to the Hampta pass and were supposed to return to Manali. However, they have not been able to contact their group so far in Manali.
Himachal Pradesh saw heavy rain and snowfall in many areas. Lahaul Spiti received snow after which it has been cut off from rest of the parts of Himachal.
At least five people were killed in separate incidents due to heavy downpour in Kullu, Chamba and Kangra districts on Monday.
Four people, including a girl, died in Kullu. A man died in Kangra district due to heavy rain which triggered flash floods and landslides in many parts of the state Monday.
Schools have been directed to remain closed in many districts on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.
As the water level in rivers and streams increased following the incessant rain, a man was swept away by the swelling Nahad Khad (rivulet) in Kangra, the district administration said.
Several houses were also swept away in flash floods as the Beas river is flowing above the dangerous level, Forest Minister Govind Singh Thakur said. He cautioned people not to go near nullahs and rivulets.
The district administration has sounded a “high alert” in Kullu. Initial loss of property due to recent rains has been estimated at about Rs. 20 crore.
Also, all adventurous sporting activities including paragliding, have been banned in Kullu, district Tourism Development Officer BS Negi said.
