Female leopard attacks man in Sunni, Himachal; forest officials asks locals to stay on alert

A female leopard attacked a man in Shimla district’s Sunni area injuring him badly. The man was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Shimla for treatment. The incident took place near Pahal in Sunni Tuesday morning.

According to the forest department, victim Sunil Kumar of Taboh village in Sunni works as a plumber in the PWD. Sunil had left for work at around 7:30 am in the morning and found a female leopard along with three cubs on the way.

On sighting Sunil, the female leopard pounced and injured him on his left arm and head. Sunil lost his balance and fell off from the cliff leading to more injuries. Sunil fell unconscious while the female leopard left the spot.

On regaining consciousness, Sunil informed the locals who took him to DDU hospital in Shimla. He was discharged after primary treatment.

Meanwhile, the forest department has issued an alert in the area. DFO Shimla, Sushil Ranas stated that the female leopard is still roaming in the jungle along with her cubs. In such a scenario the department is avoiding trapping it using a cage, he said.

Instead, officials have asked the locals to stay on alert. However, the forest department has not ruled out the possibility of laying a trap if the locals insist. A team of forest department has been sent to spot.

Meanwhile, a leopard has also been spotted near Daadni Ka Bageecha in Lalpani, Shimla. The wild cat has held the locals on tenterhooks for the past one week. Locals say that the leopard has attacked two dogs on Monday night and killed one on Sunday. They have accused the forest department of inaction stating that the leopard is straying into residential areas in hunt of dogs.

Reports of a leopard being spotted in Navbahar and jungle next to the Secretariat have also surfaced.
