In a new twist to the rape in a moving vehicle in Shimla, it has now come to light that the 19-year-old victim went to the Lakkar Bazar police station in advance fearing sexual harassment and a possible danger to her life. She even inquired from the police how to get a case registered in case someone was under threat of sexual assault.
However, she was given the number of Gudiya helpline and left to fend for herself by the men on duty.
Had she been provided security and help that very moment, she could have been possibly saved from becoming a victim of such a heinous crime? Notably, the victim went to the police at about 6:30 pm on Sunday. She was raped the same night in a moving car and then thrown out half-naked.
Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Kuldeep Singh Rathore confirmed and said what could be worst than the fact that the victim went to the police for help but the police took it very casually. He has demanded strict action against the erring police officers who refused help to the rape-victim.
Sanjay Chauhan the CPIM State Secretariat member said that the police negligence is clearly visible in this particular case as well. “The victim did go to the police fearing sexual assault on her. The police at Lakkar Bazar police station instead of helping her guided her to Dhali Police Station the same evening as about 6:30 pm.” The victim was raped the same night.
Today the Sant Ravi Das Sabha came out on the roads protesting against the police inaction. The president of the Sant Ravi Das Sabha, Karam Chhand Bhatia has demanded that the culprits be booked as early as possible.
