Fall-out of Shimla water crisis: Schools shut down for week, SDO suspended, women carrying lathis reach water control room

No monsoon  in government schools in July

The Hush Post: Government schools in Shimla will remain closed for five days starting Monday due to the water crisis that has hassled residents for more than a fortnight now.
Since most private schools in the town will remain closed for summer vacations for a week, the government decided to grant vacations to students in the government primary, middle and higher secondary schools. “However, in July, the schools will not shut down for monsoon vacations,” said Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj.

Meanwhile, an SDO of the Shimla Municipal Corporation was suspended by Irrigation and Public Health Minister Mahinder Singh for alleged negligence in the supply of water. The High Court has ordered authorities to maintain strict vigil on the ‘key-man’ opening the water supply and ordered the opening of the ‘key’ to supply water to be video-graphed.
Residents of Kasumpti, Mahli, Panthaghati and a few other colonies blocked roads in protest against inadequate water supply. Women carrying lathis reached the water control room in Chotta Shimla and protested there. Locals have been demanding the resignation of the Shimla mayor, deputy mayor and municipal commissioner.
The situation in the town eased marginally on Saturday after supply increased from 22.5 MLD to 28 MLD. The city requires 32-35 million litres of water per day.
