The Hush Post: Around a dozen Indian Youth Congress (IYC) workers and as many police personnel were injured during a violent clash that erupted outside the outside the Himachal Pradesh Assembly in Shimla today. The police had to resort to water cannons and mild force to dispel the protesting IYC workers who tried to cross the barricades placed on the road leading to the Assembly. The protestors had come to gherao the Vidhan Sabha alleging rise in unemployment, price rise, deteriorating law & order situation among others. The protestors later blocked the Shimla Highway stranding thousands of commuters.
9 police personnel, including five women and ASP Manmohan Singh, were also injured during the bloody clash. The police have registered a case against the protesting IYC workers.
The Youth Congress workers were admitted to IGMC Shimla, where senior party leaders, including Leader of Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri and HPPCC chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu reached and inquired about their well-being. The Congress has accused the state government of using force on its youth wing workers without any provocation.
Reacting on the incident, Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said that the IYC workers were trying to hog the limelight stating that it was wrong to create nuisance in the garb of protests.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Shimla even as security personnel were deployed in various parts of the city. Security has also been beefed up outside the CM’s residence.
