Ludhiana: International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Each year the UN announces an annual theme. This year’s theme is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”.

Department of PMR (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) at Christian Medical College & Hospital (CMC) Hospital, Ludhiana organized‘’Rehab Mela 2017’’ on International day of Persons with disability (2nd December) in CMC hospital Ludhiana under the guidance of director Dr. Abraham G. Thomas for spreading awareness about disability. Speaking on the occasion he encouraged the audiences with his thoughtful words and experience.

Sanjeev Talwar, MLA, Ludhiana East graced the occasion as chief guest. He appreciated department of PMR, CMC hospital for all the aid they are providing to the people of the city. Around 250 people gathered in CMC hospital including 100 disabled. On this occasion the especially abled patients performed various cultural items, including puppet show, Bhangra,  Gidda, Gathka, dance and songs by Differently abled students from  (SSA) Sarva siksha abhayan.

Dr. Santhosh Mathangi (Associate professor and HOD – PMR) emphasized to make this world disabled friendly so everybody can live in this world happily. He emphasized that public places like Railway station, bus stand, buses,public toilets, banks and ATM counters etc, should be disabled friendly. In India approximately 10-15 % of population (approximately 10 million) is disabled.Approximately 400 rehab specialists (PMR specialist) are working in India and only three Rehab specialists at presently working in Punjab. Dr. Santhosh said that measures must be taken to increase rehab specialist numbers.
