At least 23 passengers were killed and eight injured after a bus fell into a deep gorge in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. The accident took place when a passenger bus was on its way from Loran to Poonch. According to the reports, the bus skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Plera. Plera is nearly 30 km away from Poonch.
Rescue and search operation is underway. The injured have been shifted to a sub-district hospital Mandi for treatment.
According to the police, the dead bodies have been recovered. The wreckage of the bus was found near a river. The nearby villagers were seen removing the dead bodies from the spot and putting them by the roadside, from where they could be picked and carried to their homes for last rites.
The government is likely to provide ex-gratia relief to the families of the victims who have been killed.
It is not clear how the accident happened. Initial reports suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend. Most of the routes from Poonch headquarters to villages are steep with small villages nestled atop mountains.
