Three militants, including a brother of an IPS officer, were killed in an encounter with the security forces in South Kashmir’s Shopian district Tuesday. A soldier was injured during the pre-dawn operation. Security forces also destroyed the hide-out of the terrorists, an underground bunker near an orchard area.
Shamsul Haq Menganu of Draggud village is among the 3 terrorists killed. Shamsul Haq had reportedly stopped pursuing his degree in Unani medicine and joined the terror group Hizbul Mujahideen. His brother, Inamul Haq Menganu, is a 2012 batch IPS officer currently posted in the North-East.
NDTV quoted its sources saying, “Three weapons and ammunition have been recovered from the slain militants”. Four journalists covering the encounter received bullet injuries during the encounter.
Meanwhile, security personnel had to resort to pellet guns and tear gas shells to disperse the locals who tried to stop them from carrying out the operation.
Earlier, reports stated that six to seven militants, including a top Hizbul commander, had sneaked in. The joint operation was carried out by the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the J&K police.
