BJP MLA’s wife accuses him of marrying a Punjab college student; appeals to Modi

The Hush Post: A BJP legislator’s wife has accused her husband of having an extra-marital affair with a college student and marrying her.

Gagan Bhagat, a BJP legislator from R S Pura constituency in Jammu district, has been accused by his wife Monika Sharma of living with the student, who lives in the same area but studies in a university in Punjab,  after marrying her.

The student’s father, an ex-serviceman, had accused Gagan Bhagat last year of abducting his daughter from a college in Punjab. Watch video:

Gagan’s wife, who is also the state secretary of BJP’s women wing, has made an appeal to the BJP central leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying a “daughter of your own family is seeking justice, not only for myself and my children but also for that girl who had just turned 19”.

Monika Sharma and Gagan Bhagat are married for 13 years and have a 12-year-old son and four-year-old daughter. While Gagan said that legal proceedings are already going on in the court, his wife denied that any divorce case has been filed yet.

Her accusations come a day after Bhagat appeared before the disciplinary committee of the BJP in Jammu to clarify his position. Gagan Bhagat and Monika Sharma appeared before the committee separately.

“I have evidence they are married,” Sharma said, displaying the sources of her evidence to the media. She showed an incomplete marriage agreement reportedly signed by Gagan Bhagat and the student. She also showed the Aadhaar card of the student, which showed her as Gagan Bhagat’s wife and her address on the document as Gandhi Nagar in Jammu. She said she managed to get the marriage certificate before the notary signed it and has cross-checked the Aadhaar card for forgery.

“On one occasion, the girl escaped on seeing me, leaving behind her phone. The selfies taken from the phone leave no doubt that they had an extra-marital affair and that they were married, “Sharma alleged.

The student and the legislator have denied the charges, calling them an attempt to defame him.
