The Hush Post: A Major and three jawans of the Indian Army have been killed in a fierce gunfight in a bid to foil an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Gurez sector in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. The slain soldiers were identified as Major K P Rane, hawaldars Jamie Singh and Vikramjeet and rifleman Mandeep. The encounter between the Army’s patrolling party and the infiltrating group took place at Govind Nallah in Gurez sector of Bandipore district.
Initial reports said a group of eight infiltrators was trying to infiltrate into the country. “As they were challenged, six to eight militants opened fire triggering an intense gunfight. So far, four Army men, including a Major, have been killed. Two militants have also been gunned down,” said defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia.
The bodies of two militants could be seen from a distance while two more are believed to have been killed, news reports said. There is a possibility that some militants may have fled to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, the defence spokesperson said.
The gunfight between the infiltrating militants and the Army erupted at around 1 am on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. A massive counter-infiltration operation is under way in the district along the LoC.
