Big move: Jammu & Kashmir police chief SP Vaid removed

SP Vaid removed as J&K police chief

Release of Hizb commander Raiaz Naikoo’s father in exchange of kidnapped family members of the policemen was seen as a trigger

The Hush Post: SP Vaid, the police chief of Jammu and Kashmir was removed from his post late on Thursday.

The transfer is being attributed as part of a regular reshuffle at the top level. Differences between the Governor’s administration and the police chief came up after he was divested of administrative powers. Vaid had lodged a strong protest with state government and union home secretary. Earlier, state intelligence chief Abdul Gani Mir was also replaced by Dr B Srinivas.

Vaid was replaced by Dilbagh Singh, the Director General of Prisons. Dilbagh was suspended as the Deputy Inspector General of Anantnag in 2000. He was allegedly found involved in a major recruitment scam. Meanwhile, Vaid has been posted as transport commissioner with headquarters at Jammu.

The recent release of Hizb commander Raiaz Naikoo’s father was seen as a trigger. The release happened in exchange of kidnapped family members of the state’s policemen.

‘Greater Kashmir’ quoted a source saying that the Government of India and Advisor to the government on security affairs K Vijay Kumar were keen on these changes.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Vaid had written “@JmuKmrPolice has been fighting a proxy war for decades which requires a lot of courage & determination of the men & officers of JKP. Speculative articles which undermine their morale should be avoided.

The state has been under Governor’s rule after the BJP-PDP alliance ended in June. Satyapal Malik was appointed Governor last month, replacing NN Vohra.
