The Hush Post: Two persons, a Kashmir government officer and an employee of a tour and travel company, have died while trekking on a glacier in Jammu & Kashmir. A group of trekkers fell into a crevice at Kolahoi glacier, about 26 km from tourist destination Pahalgam and 15 km from Sonmarg. On Sunday morning, the trekkers had left for trekking from Pahalgam.
Officials say at least 10 trekkers were returning from Kolahoi Glacier when three of them fell into a crevice. Those killed in the incident are Naveed Jeelani and Adil Shah. Naveed was a Jammu and Kashmir Excise and Taxation Officer. Adil worked with a tour and travel group in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rescue operations were started by a joint team of police, disaster relief force and local volunteers. They were rushed to the spot by the district administration, police said.
Kolahoi is a 5 kilometre-long glacier. It has become a favourite destination for trekkers who come here from different parts of the country. The glacier is the main source of Lidder river. It is a perennial source of water for people living in Anantnag. Furthermore, this river joins the Jhelum river.
