Former US vice-president Joe Biden has announced his decision to run for president in 2020. The 76-year-old centrist Democrat is running for the White House for the third time.

Biden is up against 19 other hopefuls, including Senators Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Bernie Sanders for the 2020 Democratic nomination. He is the most experienced of them and enters the fray as a front-runner.

Joseph R. Biden Jr. ran twice unsuccessfully for president – in 1988 and 2008 – and later served as President Barack Obama’s deputy for two terms.

The announcement came in a campaign video released Thursday morning. In the video Biden rebuked the deadly Charlottesville white nationalist riots of 2017 and President Donald Trump’s handling of the aftermath.

“The core values of this nation… our standing in the world… our very democracy…everything that has made America — America –is at stake. That’s why today I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States,” he said.

The six-time senator was tipped to run for president again in 2016, the year Mr Trump was elected. However, he ruled himself out after the death of his 46-year-old son, Beau Biden, from a brain tumour.
