The Hush Post: The Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has invited BS Yeddyurappa to form the government tonight. He will be sworn-in tomorrow.
After a fractured mandate in Karnataka both the BJP and the JD(S)-Congress combine staked the claim. However, it seems the Governor Vajubhai Vala is likely to invite the BJP to form the government.
Notably, the Governor of Karnataka was the finance minister of Narendra Modi government in Gujarat and even vacated his Rajkot seat for Modi to fight elections in 2001.
The Congress had said that they will go to the apex court if the Governor invites the BJP to form the next government in Karnataka, sources in the party said.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala has, meanwhile, said the Governor is bound under the constitution and legal provisions to invite their coalition to form the government.
Let’s look at the recent past:
- Delhi Assembly election 2014 : BJP got 31 seats and AAP 28 seats but with support of Congress APP called to form the government.
- Lok Sabha election 1996: BJP was the single largest party with 161 seats and Congress was second largest party with 140 seats but United front (192 seats National front-79, Left Front-52, Tamil Maanila Congress-20, DMK- 17, AGP- 5 and Other 19) with support from Congress formed the government.
- In case of BJP forming the government in Goa, although Congress got 17 seats but to form government they should have crossed magical number of 21. BJP although got 13 seats but GFP (3 seats) Maharashtrawadi Gomantak(3 seats) and 3 independent making it 22 seats hence they made a claim to form Government in front of Governor Mrudla Sinha.
- Similarly in Manipur again, BJP (21) formed the government with support from NPF (4 seats), NPP (4 seat), LJP (1 seat) and Independent thus crossing the magically figure of 30 in house of 60 members. Here Congress had got 28 seats.
