Four members of a family including two women have been arrested by Bengaluru police for allegedly extorting over Rs 70 lakh from a businessman. The accused have been identified as Rani (39), her daughter Preethi (23), Preethi’s husband Manikandan (30), and Rani’s brother Prasad (26).

Krishnadas (58) from Thindlu, is a caterer, and was allegedly in a relationship with Rani. Rani used to share her personal problems with him. Realising that Das was wealthy, she made an elaborate plan to extort money from him.

The plot:

In February this year, when Rani invited Krishnadas home, her brother and son-in-law dressed as policemen ‘raided’ the house. They threatened to book Krishnadas for prostitution and took Rs 5 lakh from him.

Later in July, the two contacted Krishnadas stating that Rani had been murdered and they would name him an accused as she stayed in touch with him. Das was again forced to pay a total sum of Rs 30 lakh to get the case closed. Subsequently, in September, they again called him and said the case would be reopened if he did not pay them Rs 20 lakh. Krishnadas arranged the money by pledging his assets.

The greedy gang tried one more trick to extract money. Preethi, Rani’s daughter, then contacted him in October. She threatened that she would file a complaint against him before the Women Commission in her mother’s murder case. She demanded that he pay her Rs 20 lakh.

Krishnadas grew suspicious when Manikandan and Murthy, posing as cops, demanded Rs 65 lakh from him to pay the police and judges to close his case.

Taking the help of police, he agreed to give the duo Rs 65 lakh as per their demand. When he went to hand over the cash, the police arrested all suspects, including Baby Rani who faked her death.
