The Hush Post: In another example of misuse of power, an assistant professor posted in the Mangalore University is facing allegations of sexually harassing girl students. The teacher allegedly used to touch the girl students inappropriately while taking classes and film them while changing clothes during cultural programmes.

A complaint against the accused teacher Umesh Naik, faculty at Library Science, was given in December last and SPARSH (Sensitization, Prevention & Redress of Sexual Harassment) committee had proved that all allegations made by girls were true in Syndicate Meeting, but no action has been taken against Naik, the report said.

As per a complaint, the girl students of Mangalore University had given a complaint to university alleging that Umesh Naik used to sexually harass and touch inappropriately in class as well as in computer lab. After learning about students’ complaint to the university, Naik started to threaten of the dire constituency in the classroom, they have alleged in another letter addressed to the university top authorities, it was reported.

The SPARSH committee is functioning through the administrative structure given by the university and after inquiry, they submitted a report to the syndicate of the university. The same was discussed a few months ago in the Syndicate meeting. As per highly placed sources, after learning about the decision to suspend him of the post, Naik challenged the validity of SPARSH committee investigations and then vice-chancellor K Byrappa asked to reconstitute the committee to table the report again. “Due to this action against Naik has been reportedly delayed. The newly constituted committee will submit a report and syndicate meeting will be held at the earliest,” a source was quoted in the report.

Another reliable source slammed former VC Byrappa for not taking any strict decisions when such cases are discussed in syndicate. “Whenever such issues are discussed and time came to take action, he was in two minds. Adding to it, no other members spoke about it,” the source was quoted as saying.

Umesh Naik, while speaking to a regional news channel, had denied these charges against him.
