The Hush Post: Rape accused Jalandhar Bishop, Franco Mulakkal, on Tuesday filed an anticipatory bail before the Kerala High Court. Police had summoned Bishop Mulakkal for interrogation on Wednesday.
The Bishop said in his anticipatory bail application that the claims made by the nun against him were false. He said the nun had some ‘personal vengeance’ against him, a report said.
In his plea for anticipatory bail, Bishop Mulakkal has requested he will cooperate in all the processes of the investigation. The Bishop said in the nun’s first statement there was no complaint of sexual harassment. Bishop Mulakkal also reportedly informed the High Court that the nun and her family had threatened to kill him.
Earlier on Monday, the Diocese of Jalandhar had announced that the accused Bishop had written to the Pope.
Bishop Franco Mulakkal wrote a letter to Holy Father Pope Francis expressing his desire to step aside temporarily and requested to be relieved from the administration of the Diocese in the background of the court’s opinion in favour of Bishop Franco, which says, there is a lack of adequate evidence for the Bishop’s arrest, indicating his innocence. He decided on his own to make the request to the Holy Father,” the statement read.
Some of the sisters of the Kuravilangad convent are protesting near the Kochi High Court, demanding the Bishop’s arrest. The protest entered its 10th day on Tuesday. Several people including activists, artists, politicians and the general public have supported the protest.
An 85-year-old Jose Joseph, of the Joint Christian Council, is on a hunger strike since September 9 demanding the Bishop’s arrest. Rape survivor’s sister joined Jose Joseph on Monday. Activist P Geetha also reportedly has joined the hunger strike.
