The Hush Post: Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, the accused in the Kerala nun rape case, has stepped down. Franco Mullakal has stepped down from the administrative responsibilities. He will continue to remain as Bishop. Fr Mathew Kokkandam has been given temporary charge, according to reports.
The case is now also being taken up at the Vatican. The church representative from India is there and is likely to discuss the issue, news agency ANI reported.
Bishop Franco Mulakkal said in a letter, “I am likely to be called for further clarifications by the police.”
The Archbishop of Bombay, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, has said that Mulakkal should step down. “Let an inquiry be held in a free and fair manner, he had said.
The nun had sought the intervention of the Vatican multiple times. She had questioned why the church was “closing its eyes to the truth.”
She alleged that Bishop Mulakkal was using “political and money power” to “bury” the case against him. The Kerala nun had filed a case against the Jallandar bishop in June accusing him of raping her 13 times. There has been a massive uproar in Kerala with nuns taking to the streets over the last few days seeking arrest of the Bishop.
