The killer of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman has finally been arrested.
Abdul Majed, a fugitive killer of Bangladesh’s independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday, nearly 45 years after the assassination.
He was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj after being produced in a court.
Majed is among 12 people convicted of assassinating Rahman and other members of his family in 1975. Bangladesh got its independence in 1971 after the intervention of Indian Army.
The trial of Bangabandhu assassination case started in Dhaka in 1997. This was 22 years after a group of disgruntled army officers assassinated him. He was assassinated along with most of his family members on August 15 in 1975.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on November 19, 2009 upheld the death penalty of 12 convicted ex-army officers for the assassination.
Five of the convicts – Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Mohiuddin Ahmed – were hanged on January 27, 2010.
