A villager from Sainj village in Kullu has filed a police complaint alleging caste remarks by a mob. A group of people allegedly forced him to pay a fine of Rs 5,100. The reason: “simply because a bouquet thrown by followers of a local deity fell into my lap”.
The complainant, Lal Chand, claimed he and his friends were beaten up during a religious ceremony. The two were thrashed at Kartha fair in Thatibeed in Banjar sub-division.
Terming it a bad omen as he was a Scheduled Caste, the mob demanded Rs 11,000 as fine for the “offence”, said Lal Chand.
“We were able to save our lives by paying Rs 5,100 to members of a committee that takes care of the deity,” he said while talking to The Tribune.
In the melee, he and his friends also lost cellphones and some ornaments, he claimed.
A video of the incident, that reportedly took place on January 16, has gone viral.
A case had been registered.
