A tenant failed to pay rent on time and the landlord locked him inside his house without food and water. After four days without eating and drinking anything, the tenant collapsed.
Now Gurwinder Singh of Samrala, Ludhiana, who was the landlord, has been booked for allegedly locking his tenant in a room for four days.
The tenant in question failed to pay Rs 800 as rent. The tenant, Das Singh, was without food and water since October 19. The police rescued him on Monday evening.
The neighbours told the police that Gurwinder Singh threatened them, if they tried to help Das, they will have to pay. An FIR against the landlord has been registered under Sections 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the act. The complaint was made by one Subhash Kumar.
Kumar said that Das was not coming to work for the past four days. On Monday, when he went to Das’ rented accommodation at Gobindgarh village, he was shocked to see him locked in the room. “He was crying for help.”
He immediately called the police. It was found that the landlord had handed over the keys to another tenant. The police took the keys and rescued him. Das told the police that Kumar had sent him to Malad in Mumbai for work three months ago. When he returned to Ludhiana, Gurwinder asked him to pay Rs 4,500. Since he could not pay immediately, he was locked inside.
