A 20-year-old Bangladeshi woman surprised everyone after she gave birth to twins just after delivering a baby 26 days earlier.
Arifa Sultana delivered a premature baby boy on February 25 at the Khulna Medical College Hospital in Khulna district.
She returned home with the baby, but 26 days later was rushed again to Ad-Din hospital after feeling pain in her stomach.
“She came to the hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain,” said Dr. Sheila Poddar, a gynecologist at Ad-Din hospital in Dhaka, reported CNN.
Doctors performed an ultrasound on Sultana and realized she was still pregnant with twins in a second uterus.
Sultana had two uteruses, a rare condition called uterus didelphys. Her first baby and the twins were conceived and grown in separate wombs.
“We were very shocked and surprised. I have never observed something like this before,” Dr. Poddar told the BBC.
Dr. Poddar said that an emergency Caesarean was performed immediately. Twins- a boy and a girl were born through the C-section.
“All three children are safe and healthy,” Poddar said. “The mother is also fine.”
Sultana and her husband are reportedly “very poor”, a reason why she could not opt for the ultrasound earlier.
Her husband earns less than around 5000 rupees a month as a labourer.
“It was a miracle from Allah that all my children are healthy. I will try my best to keep them happy,” BBC quoted her as saying.
