200 feared dead as Algerian military plane crashes

The Hush Post: An Algerian military plane carrying 200 people crashed soon after taking off. The plane had taken off from the Boufarik airbase, located near the capital, Algiers.

The plane, which was an Ilyushin Il-76, was heading to the western Algerian city of Bechar.

Nearly a dozen ambulances reached the spot, where thick smoke could be seen billowing from the crash site. 10 fire engines were also pushed into service.

While the causes of the crash are yet unknown, authorities say investigations are on to determine the cause of the crash.

All roads around the airport were closed for traffic in order to facilitate rescue operations. A source from the Algerian military, speaking to local news broadcaster Al Hadath said that the chances of any one surviving the crash are slim.
