Britain Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed India-origin politician Rishi Sunak as his finance minister. Rishi Sunak is the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy. Boris appointed Sunak as Chancellor of the Exchequer after Sajid Javid resigned in a shock development on Thursday.
39-year-old Rishi Sunak is an MP from Richmond in Yorkshire. He was the Treasury chief secretary since last July. SUnak will join Home secretary Priti Patel on the top government bench. He will move into No. 11 Downing Street, next door to the Prime Minister’s Office as he takes charge of the second most important government position as the finance minister.
10 Downing Street said the Queen has approved the appointment of Rishi Sunak.
The development comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson carried out the first reshuffle of his cabinet since winning a parliamentary majority in December’s election.
Rishi Sunak is married to Murthy’s daughter Akshata. He first entered the UK Parliament in 2015 and has fast climbed up the Conservative Party ranks as a staunch Brexiteer.
