Tulsi Gabbard, the American politician, who has said that she is running for the White House in 2020, is not an Indian American but a practising Hindu.
Her parents are practising Hindus and so is she. Her father, Mike Gabbard, is of American Samoan descent. He was an American citizen at birth. He practices mantra meditation, including kirtan. Her mother is of European descent and a practicing Hindu too. So, Tulsi also chose Hinduism as her religion while she was a teenager.
In 1983, when Tulsi was two years old, her family moved to Hawaii. She has spoken about growing up as a mixed-race girl in a multicultural and multi-religious household.
Tulsi was home-schooled through high school except for two years at a girls-only missionary academy in the Philippines. She graduated from Hawaii Pacific University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 2009.
In 2002, at the age of 21, Gabbard had become the youngest legislator ever elected in Hawaii’s history and the youngest woman ever elected to a US state legislature.
Tulsi, 37, is a US army veteran who participated in the Iraq war. She is a three-term member of the US House of Representative from Hawaii. Hawaii is the place where former US President Barack Obama was born and raised.
Tulsi says will run for 2020 presidentship
A Democratic lawmaker, she told CNN, “I have decided to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week”.
Gabbard, 37, is the second woman after Senator Elizabeth Warren to enter the presidential race from the Democratic party.
She will become the first-ever Hindu to be running for the presidency in the US.
Fight against Kamala Harris, an Indian American
More than 12 Democrats , including Indian-origin Senator from California Kamala Harris are expected to announce their White House run to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020.
Indian Americans have been keenly following both, Gabbard and Harris, with mixed feelings.
Gabbard is a white American but as a practicing Hindu is famous among Hindu Americans.
However, Harris is an Indian American from her mother’s side and African American from her father’s.
Indian Americans are not happy with Harris as she has sought to project herself as an African American.
