The United Nations Security Council has designated Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as global terrorist. The decision was made after China lifted its hold on a proposal to blacklist him under the Security Council’s Sanctions Committee.
Sharing the news, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador, Syed Akbaruddin, tweeted, “Big,small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list. Grateful to all for their support.”
China removed its hold on the proposal moved by France, UK and the US in the Security Council’s 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee in February. This happened days after the horrific terror attack in Pulwama on the CRPF jawans which was carried out by Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish. Maulana is the supreme commander of Jaish.
Earlier, Beijing had put a technical hold in March on a fresh proposal to impose a ban on Azhar. It was for the fourth time that China had blocked the JeM head’s listing as a global terrorist by the UN.
Welcoming the move, France said that it remains mobilised at all levels to take effective measures against terrorism.
“For many years now, French diplomacy has been relentlessly pleading for sanctioning Azhar, head of the terrorist group responsible, notably, for the Pulwama attack last February. In application of its Monetary and Financial Code, France had adopted national sanctions against Masood Azhar on 15th March. This decision taken at the United Nations Security Council signals the successful realisation of our efforts,” the co-sponsor of the proposal said.
