Three months after Thai King Maha Vajiralongkor married his former consort Suthida, he named his mistress as his royal noble consort in a ceremony on his 67th birthday.

The King officially anointed Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi, 34, live on television. During the service she lay on the floor to remain lower than the King’s feet, in accordance Thai royal tradition. She is the first official royal consort in decades. The last Thai King to openly declare having multiple partners ruling was in 1932.

Sineenat is a former army nurse and served as the King’s bodyguard for a time.

Shockingly the King’s wife Suthida sat right beside him as he anointed his mistress. However, Queen Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Aydhaya looked on emotionlessly as her husband publicly recognised Sineenat as chao khun phra (royal consort).

Forme Thai Airwasy flight attendent Suthida Vajiralongkorn na Ayudhya too held the position of royal consort until 2017. She ‘legally married’ the King in accordance with royal traditions in May with a statement from the royal family explaining the King had decided to promote General Suthida to become Queen Suthida.

The announcement of Sineenatt as royal consort has faced no public criticism in Thailand as under lèse-majesté laws those who offend the crown can get up to 15 years in prison.

ECCENTRIC KING

The eccentric King has married thrice, has seven children and is said to have an explosive temper.

He also threw a party in 2007 for his pet poodle, Fufu, who held the rank of Air Chief Marshall in the Thai armed forces.

Thai traditions regard the ruling King as god-like and semi-divine. As a result, he must sit higher than everyone else.

This is to the point that during official ceremonies and speeches his feet should be elevated above everyone else’s heads.
