An independent corporator from Betul district of Madhya Pradesh was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl for more than a year. Surprisingly, the accused is known for holding mass Rakhi festival in Betul.
The police started the investigation of the accused Rajendra Singh after someone sent them an anonymous letter, claiming himself as ‘Sajag Prahari’ (alert sentry).
The information in the letter was serious and we started our investigations. When we spoke to the survivor, she confirmed it and urged us to take action. We assured the family of the survivor about her security,” said Betulganj Police station in-charge Motilal Kushwaha.
Giving more details about the accused, Kushwaha said,
“He is an influential person and had threatened the child with dire consequences. This was going for nearly a year. The survivor’s mother came to know about it in March this year. She went to Singh’s house to confront him, but she was also threatened and silenced.”
“We sent our team to arrest him on Sunday. Due to increased pressure from our side, he surrendered at the police station,” he added.
A case was registered against Rajendra Singh on Sunday night. The accused is a corporator of Jakir Hussain ward. He is famous for holding mass Raksha Bandhan events where thousands of women tie rakhis to him.
The police have increased the patrolling around the survivor’s house. Also, additional security will be provided to her family if they need it.
