Killer drug, that can kill 4-5 million people, used in chemical warfare seized in Indore

The Hush Post: In a major achievement, nine kg of a deadly synthetic opioid, fentanyl, potentially used in chemical warfare has been seized from Indore.

Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin

In a news report carried by the Times of India, it was revealed that the chemical can kill 4-5 million people. Even a small amount of 2mg can kill a person by getting absorbed through the skin or if inhaled accidentally.

The illegal and dangerous covert activities were being carried out in an illegal laboratory in Indore. It was being run by a local businessman and a ‘US-hating’ PhD ‘scholar’ chemist. A Mexican national has also been arrested.

The operation was conducted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) along with scientists from DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). Lasting over a week, it is the first such seizure if its kind in India. The value of the chemical seized is about Rs 110 Cr in the international market.

The news report quoted sources as saying that traffickers were trying to shift the base of manufacturing from China to India. A major crackdown on its production in China triggered the shift of base.

Fentanyl is a favourite of drug traffickers, smuggled from China to Mexico-Canada and then US. It is 50 times more potent than heroin and 1000 times stronger than morphine.

“Scientists are baffled at its production in India as it needs a lot of expertise in handling the drug,” said DP Dash, DG, DRI. “I am happy that the first attempts to manufacture the toxic drug in India have been thwarted,” he added.

An analgesic, fentanyl is used in pain-killers. The street names of Fentanyl pills are apache, China town, China girl, among a few.
