“This is my mother’s uterus. I am happy that my baby will be born from the same uterus from which I was born”
The Hush Post: A woman from Gujarat, will soon become Asia’s first woman to give birth to a child after undergoing a uterus transplant. Meenakshi Valand, 27-year-old from Bharuch, lost two babies after full pregnancies and had four abortions in nine years of her marriage. Interestingly, it was her mother’s uterus which has been transplanted to her.
The woman underwent the uterus transplant surgery in May 2017 at Pune’s Galaxy Care hospital and is now in her 20th week of pregnancy. The foetal heartbeat and her vitals like blood pressure, weight gain, etc are being monitored daily.
Though the delivery is due in December the doctors aren’t taking chances. “By early November, we should be able to perform a C-Section,” said gynaecologist, Dr Milind Telang.
Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, Director of Pune’s Galaxy Care Hospital also informed that the lady was born without a uterus.
Transplanting the uterus was not an easy surgery and chances of infection were very high. The embryo was completely embedded in the woman so that she could conceive,” Dr. Puntambekar said.
He further said that this will be first delivery from a transplanted uterus in Asia and ninth in the world.
The woman expressed her happiness and said that that soon her dream to become a mother will come true. “This is my mother’s uterus. I am happy that my baby will be born from the same uterus from which I was born,” she added.
