Sushma Swaraj has cited health reasons. “It is the party which decides, but I have made up my mind not to contest the next elections,” said the 66-year-old. Swaraj said that she had informed the party of her decision.
Sushma Swaraj is a Member of Parliament from Vidisha in MP and is one of the senior most leaders of the BJP. Her prolonged absence from her parliamentary constituency was questioned through posters recently. While answering a question on the posters, she reportedly announced her decision.
Swaraj is known for her oratorical skills and sharp repartee in the house. NDTV reported that the BJP might bring her back into parliament through the Rajya Sabha.
NDTV quoted sources saying that Swaraj needed to avoid infections and was taking precautions. Earlier in 2016, Swaraj underwent a kidney transplant at the AIIMS.
She had then tweeted, “I am in AIIMS because of kidney failure. Presently, I am on dialysis. I am undergoing tests for a Kidney transplant. Lord Krishna will bless.”
