A school teacher in Madhya Pradesh asked students to slap a class VI girl 168 times for not completing her homework. Police have arrested the teacher and the local court has sent him to judicial custody.

The incident took place in January last year in Thandla town of MP. Manoj Verma, a school teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyala, allegedly directed the students to slap the girl.

The girl’s father Shiv Pratap Singh filed complaints with the police and the school management. A committee constituted by the school found Manoj guilty and suspended him.

The police had booked the teacher under relevant sections of the IPC and the Juvenile Justice Act.

Shiv Pratap Singh informed that his daughter did not go to school from January 1 to 10, 2018 as she was unwell. On January 11, when the girl went to school without completing her homework, Verma told her classmates to slap her as a form of punishment following which 14 girls slapped her two times every day for six days.

Singh said that his daughter was distressed and fell ill following the incident. She had to be admitted to a local hospital and even refused to go to school, he said.

Thandla tehsil’s Judicial Magistrate First Class Jai Patidar on Monday turned down Manoj’s bail plea and sent him to 14-day judicial custody.

The police arrested 35-year-old Manoj Verma on Monday and the court denied him bail the same day.
