About 20 persons were killed and 50 injured in a major explosion at a chemical factory located at Waghadi village in Shirpur, Maharashtra on Saturday. Seventy persons are still trapped inside the factory, as per reports.

The explosion occurred inside a chemical company compound in Shirpur’s Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Six fire brigades were immediately pressed into service.

The blast was so loud and intense that surrounding villages felt tremors. The MIDC premises is far from the city, therefore several workers reside within the company premises along with their families.

About 100 workers were inside the factory at the time of the explosion. Among those injured include several minor children living in the factory compound.

The police control room received a call about the explosion at 10.20 am. Rescue efforts were delayed as workers feared multiple explosions would follow.

The overall death toll is likely to go up, fear authorities.

Explosion of cylinders is being said as the reason behind the blast at the factory. However, no official information has been released.

Waghadi village, where the incident took place, is 60 km away from Dhule and 400 km from Mumbai.
