4 dead in Elphinstone tower in Mumbai

The Hush Post: Four persons were killed and 14 injured as a fire broke out on the 12th floor of a high-rise residential building in Mumbai’s Parel area on Wednesday morning.

The fire brigade control room got a message about the blaze at Elphinstone Crystal Tower, near Hindmata Cinema, around 8:30 a.m.

Two completely charred bodies were extricated from the building.  According to a TV news report, these two persons, a senior citizen lady and a male, had got stuck in the building lift. Two persons succumbed to injuries at the KEM hospital.

The smoke from the raging fire spread rapidly and residents were trapped on the building’s staircases,  Fire Brigade chief P S Rahangdale told mediapersons. Eight fire engines and four tankers were pressed into action.

The Level-2 fire was later declared as a Level-4 fire.

The BMC  (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation)  has said that the building had been declared ‘unsafe’, there had been blatant flouting of norms with no fire fighting installations in the residential building.
