Porn sites banned by Jio, other telecom service providers may follow suit

A user on Reddit wrote, “I tried to load some porn websites, but was unable to load them.”

The Hush Post: Telecom service provider Jio seems to have banned a number of popular porn websites. These include porn websites like Xvideos and Pornhub.  It is reported that the company has banned the sites in response to a Uttarakhand High Court order. However, there has been no official confirmation from the company.

It still remains unclear as to what exactly has transpired. Jio users have been complaining that most of the porn website are not accessible since October 23. The browsers show an error message on loading. A user on Reddit wrote, “I tried to load some porn websites, but was unable to load them.”

Other internet service providers (ISP) are expected to follow suit.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) in 2015 had banned a total of 827 websites, but the direction was withdrawn later.

On September 27, 2018, the Uttarakhand High Court ordered blocking of the 827 websites. The order asked ISPs to ban the sites or face cancellation of licence. The bench had said, “Unlimited access to these pornographic sites is required to be blocked (or) curbed to avoid an adverse influence on the impressionable minds of children.”

The order was received by the union government on October 8 following which a fresh directive has been issued to the ISPs.  Jio probably might be following the directives.

In India, while producing porn continues to be illegal, accessing and watching it in private has no legal consequences.
