Internet singing sensation Ranu Mondal continues to dominate the social media. When she was first discovered singing, her voice was compared to that of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. But ‘Lata Didi’s’ dig at Ranu Mondal hasn’t gone down well with a section of social media users. Ranu Mondal, however, doesn’t seem to be perturbed the Lata Mangeshkar’s comments.
In a recent interview with Navbharat Times, Ranu Mondal said she considered “Lataji her senior”. She said, “Lataji ki umar ke hisab se mai choti thi, hu aur aage ja kar bhi rahungi.. Bachpan se unka awaz pasand hai. (As far as age is concerned, I am younger to her and will always remain her junior. I have loved Lataji’s voice since childhood).”
Earlier, when Lata Mangeshkar was asked about Ranu Mondal, she had remarked, “Agar mere naam aur kaam se kissiko bhala hota hai toh main apne-aap ko khush-kismat samajhti hoon (If anyone gets benefited by my name and work then I feel fortunate),” the legendary singer had said.
Lata Mangeshkar added, “But I also feel imitation is not a reliable and durable companion for success. By singing my songs or Kishoreda’s (Kumar), or (Mohd) Rafi Saab’s, or Mukesh Bhaiyya or Asha’s (Bhosle) numbers, aspiring singers can get short-term attention”.
Ranu Mondal has a rags to riches story- thanks to the social media. More than a million people have heard her singing Lata Mangeshkar’s Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai on a raliway platform where a 26-year old engineer heard her sing and posted it on facebook. Slowly and steadliy, it got viral.
Ranu, in her late 50s has become India’s latest internet sensation. Moreover, she also got to meet her daughter after a long time after she saw her mother on the internet.
