Eight students were injured following a “commotion” during a function at Mithibai College in Mumbai on Thursday evening.
A stampede occurred during a concert by rapper Divine. He was performing at Mithibai College’s annual Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) festival, Colosseum, at Jashoda Rang Mandir (JRM) Ground.
One person suffered a rib fracture and three were admitted in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU).
A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said the incident was reported at around 10:30pm.
Initial reports suggest the stampede may have been triggered by a group of teenagers trying to enter the college ground. However, one of the BMC officials said it was not a stampede, but a minor incident caused by panic.
JRM Ground has an estimated capacity of 1,000. As the gate crashed, the students received severe injuries.
Boys from the neighbourhood thronged the college auditorium. Some students complained of suffocation, the BMC official said. Students started running helter-skelter and in the melle many received injuries.
