Actor-turned politician Urmila Matondkar has resigned from the Congress. Urmitla Matondkar had joined the grand old party in March. She has blamed “petty in-house politics” for the move.
News agency ANI quoted her saying, “My political and social sensibilities refuse to allow vested interests in the party to use me as a mean to fight petty in-house politics instead of working on a bigger goal in Mumbai Congress.”
The Rangeela actress accused the Congress of overlooking the concerns she had raised earlier. She had written a letter to former Mumbai Congress president Milind Deora on May 16.
In her statement Matondkar said, “…the said letter containing privileged and confidential communication was conveniently leaked to the media which according to me was an act of blatant betrayal”.
The Rangeela actress had unsuccessfully contested the last Lok Sabha from the Mumbai North seat against BJP stalwart Gopal Shetty.
Matondkar’s resignation has come as a major embarrassment for the Congress. The party is struggling to keep its flock together ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls.
