Tension in Ahmednagar after murder of 2 Shiv Sena leaders; NCP legislator arrested, relative booked

The fatal assault on the Shiv Sena leaders Sanjay Kotkar and Vasant Thube took place hours after a civic bypoll results were announced on Saturday in Kedgaon

The Hush Post: An MLA of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sangram Jagtap, was arrested on Sunday, a day after two leaders of Shiv Sena leaders were killed in Kedgaon in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. There was tension after the murder of two Shiv Sena leaders in an assault that took place within hours of announcement of a civic body by-election on Saturday in Kedgaon.

As the tension spread further after Shiv Sena leaders’ murders, the police in Ahmednagar also lodged an FIR against MLA Jagtap’s father and NCP Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Arun Jagtap and his father-in-law and a BJP MLA Shivaji Kardiley among 30 others in this regard, The Indian Express reported on Monday.

The deceased Shiv Sena leaders were Sanjay Kotkar, the deputy chief of the Ahmednagar city unit, and another leader Vasant Thube. The police had to intervene during the poll campaigning for the bypoll of Kedgaon civic body’s Ward 32 bypoll. The cops had had to intervene twice to disperse the warring workers from the rival political parties, report said.

Two assailants riding a motorcycle on Saturday, at about 6.15 pm, chased Kotkar and Thube, who too were on a bike, and first shot at Kotkar who fell down and was attacked with a sharp weapon, police reportedly said. Meanwhile Thube was chased by the attackers as he tried to flee to save himself from getting assaulted. The attackers chased him and shot him dead, as per police.

Hordes of Shiv Sena workers resorted to vandalism once the news of fatal assault on Shiv Sena leaders spread in the area which was gripped by tension. Later on Saturday, one suspect, identified as Sandeep Gunjal, surrendered along with the firearms and other weapons reportedly used in the murder. He has reportedly taken the responsibility of killing the two Shiv Sena leaders due to a personal emity.

But based on a complaint filed by Sanjay Kotkar’s son and the subsequent investigation, police booked 30 people for murder and arrested NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap.

“We have arrested MLA Sangram Jagtap and three others in connection with the murder as of now. More arrests will be made,” The Indian Express quoted Deputy superintendent of police Akshay Shinde as saying.

The other persons booked in this case include Sangram’s father Arun Jagtap, an NCP MLC, his father-in-law and BJP MLA Shivaji Kardiley and Sandeep Kotkar, ex-mayor of Ahmednagar, the report said.

A police reportedly officer said that though these accused hail from different political parties, were supported the Congress candidate Vishal Kotkar. The murdered Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Kotkar had received threats for contesting the elections. Congress candidate Vishal Kotkar had won this bypoll by less than 500 votes, it was reported.

Hordes of Jagtap’s supporters ransacked the police office when he was brought the Ahmednagar Superintendent of Police’s office. “The situation was tense in some areas after the incident, but it is now under control after the police deployment,” DSP Shinde was reported as saying.

A senior inspector Abhay Parmar, in-charge of the Kotwali police station in Ahmednagar has been suspended as an inquiry is in process into the failure of police machinery in maintaining law and order.

Meanwhile senior Shiv Sena leaders Ramdas Kadam, Deepak Kesarkar and Diwakar Raote and senior police officials including the Inspector General Vinoykumar Choubey and ADGP Bipin Bihari visited the affected areas.
