Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is no more. Parrikar was 63. An IIT graduate, Parrikar was born on December 13, 1955 in Mapusa, Goa. He did his senior secondary in Marathi medium before cracking the prestigious IIT exam and subsequently studied at IIT Bombay.

His spouse Medha passed away in 2001. He is survived by his two children — Utpal and Abhijaat. Uptal is in the US and Abhijaat is a local businessman.

Parrikar was diagnosed with a pancreatic ailment in February last year, was “extremely critical.” Last month, he was admitted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji. He was discharged on February 26.

Since he was diagnosed, Mr Parrikar had undergone treatment in hospitals of the US and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi. He had also been treated at hospitals in Mumbai and Goa.

He returned to work in December 2018. At that point he admitted that he was battling a “life-threatening disease.” But said he would continue to work till his death.

On January 30, he presented the state budget in the Goa assembly. His appearance, with a tube in his nose, drew flak from the opposition parties, mainly from the Congress. Days later, he also hinted that he would play an active role in the campaign for the coming Lok Sabha election.

“I will not give a big speech. I will reserve those for elections,” Mr Parrikar said at a meeting of BJP workers in presence of party chief Amit Shah.

The Congress questioned the CM’s ability to work and accused the BJP of parading him despite his condition.

The Congress has been making attempts to capture power in the state. Over the weekend, alleging that the BJP no longer has majority in the house, the party asked the Governor to sack the BJP government in the state and invite it to form government.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had gone to meet him about a month ago which triggered strange political speculations.
