The Hush Post: A sea of 35,000 farmers had descended at the loan waiver scheme launched today at Mansa. The Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh formally launched the farm debt waiver scheme today. As part of the first installment, this scheme will benefit a total of 3.20 lakh farmers. Over all 5.63 lakh farmers will ultimately stand to benefit out of this scheme.
Captain Amarinder Singh along with other leaders issued certificates to farmers of five districts. Total of 35,000 farmers were present at the event. Gurdaas Mann was specially called for the occasion where he also performed.
Meanwhile, opposing the loan waiver scheme, Opposition leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira raised slogans against Punjab government and showed black flags to Punjab CM.
Punjab government is playing with the lives of farmers Khaira said. He along with other protesters got detained and all the detainees were taken in buses to Joga Police station.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Additional Chief Secretary, Co-operation, DP Reddy and Additional Chief Secretary, Development, Viswajeet Khanna had said the government has already identified 5.63 lakh farmers, who had taken loan of nearly Rs 2,700 crore from cooperative institutions as on 31.03.2017, as beneficiaries for disbursement of the debt waiver certificates in the first of the four planned phases for completion of the entire process.
