The Hush Post: There are allegation and counter allegations of violence and booth capturing in the local bodies’ elections taking place in three cities of Punjab today. The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party have alleged the Congress of booth-capturing in many places in the state. Addressing a press briefing in Gurdaspura near Sangrur state BJP chief Vijay Sampla said, Congress MLAs are roaming the streets of various cities of Punjab — including Patiala, Jalandhar and Amritsar — with anti-social elements and have captured polling booths. Also the district administration and police is turning a deaf ear to our request.
Union Minister Sampla called the ongoing civic body elections a farce. State BJP secretary Aman Punia claimed that they received reports of Congress “goons” trying to threaten its leaders to stay away from polling stations. The BJP also said that small cities were also reporting violence they claim began on Sunday morning, and accused the Congress of “murdering democracy”.
According to the reports since Punjab Congress leaders are well aware that they would lose elections, they have directed their goons to capture booths,” Punjab BJP vice-president Harjit Grewal said.
Sunam MLA Aman Arora accused the Congress of openly murdering democracy. Arora, AAP’s Punjab co-convener, said, accusing the Congress of trying to tamper with the elections from the vvery beginning by rejecting nominations from other parties and refusing to give No Objection certificates without valid reasons. Earlier, in the day, the Congress had alleged that Akali supporters had damaged three shops and vehicles in ward no 14 in Patiala. BJP leader Vineet Joshi, has tweeted booth capturing in Ward No 39, Ward No 40 and Ward No 49.
