The Hust Post: CRPF soldier, Manoj Tomar, sadly, is not an exception but the “rule”.  Not unlike many of his military/para-military peers, he is in a state where he is forced to justify his decision to join the security force. Grieviously injured in the March 2014 Sukma terror attack during which 11 of his companions attained martyrdom, this poor soldier is now the subject of government apathy.

Native to Tarsama in Madhya Pradesh, Manoj served in former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s security detail for 8 long years. He received 7 bullet wounds in his stomach as also reversible damage to one eye, all in the line of duty. He received first aid and during an initial surgery part of his intestine had to be removed to outside his stomach. To this day, Manoj remains in that condition carrying around his intestines in a polythene bag, running from pillar to post, begging for his “right” to free medical aid. Although he was promised Rs 5 lakhs by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, he is yet to see any or all of that amount.

The authorities, on the other hand, are taking shelter of absurd departmental rules and denying Manoj at every step. It has been ascertained that Manoj’s condition can be alleviated with proper medical intervention but at a cost he cannot afford. As per the stated “Rules” Manoj can be treated free of cost only at a certain empanelled Narayana Hospital in Raipur since he received his injuries while on duty in Chattisgarh. If only the Government were to show empathy and intervene timely so that Manoj can be successfully treated for his stomach condition at AIIMS, New Delhi and for his eye in Chennai.
