CHANDIGARH RAPE ACCUSED ATTEMPTS SUICIDE, SURVIVES

Chandigarh, The Hush Post: The auto driver Mohammed Irfan, one of the accused in the recent gang rape case, made a futile attempt to commit suicide on Monday morning. He stabbed himself with a piece of broken mirror inside Cell Number 10 at Model Burail Jail. Irfan smashed the mirror which was fixed on the wall of his Cell and inflicted multiple injuries on himself at around 9:45 am, a senior jail official requesting anonimity said. The other jail inmates raised an alarm and the jail staff members rushed him to the health dispensary inside the jail premises. After first aid, he was referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh. Sources in the jail administration said that Irfan’s condition was stated to be stable and doctors have advised a minor surgery. Irfan, a father of four children, was arrested for raping a 22-year old PG resident of Mohali in Sector 53, Chandigarh on November 24. Since then, he has been lodged in Burail jail. His two accomplices, Garib and Poppu, were also arrested and they are also lodged in the same jail. A senior jail officer said that immediately after the suicide attempt by Irfan, the other two accused were shifted to another barrack where there is no ceiling fan, mirror, and other objects which they could use as a tool to harm themselves. Irfan was kept separately from the other two accused.
