The Hush Post: Following directions from Punjab and Haryana High Court, the UT Administration has started removing dead and dry trees on the road verges of the city. These trees pose a threat to life and property particularly in the times of rain and thunderstorm. They are especially a threat during monsoons. There are more than 600 dead trees in the city. Of these, 108 trees — of species like Eucalyptus, Silver Oak, Popular, Chakrassia, Shisham, Kikar, Cassia, Neem, Deak, Enterlobiam, Amaltas, Kachnar, Papari, Arjun, Enteropbia, Shishbool, Pink Cassia, Ashoka Pandula, Bottle Palm and Thuja Compacta — are being removed in the first phase. The tender process for removal of trees has been started. The court had issued directions to the administration for framing a policy during a hearing of a case which went back to September 15, 2013 when a 20-year-old girl suffered 75 per cent disability after a dead tree fell on her.
