The Hush Post: A French police officer who had swapped himself for a hostage in the French supermarket siege died after being shot and stabbed. President Emmanuel Macron has termed it as “an Islamist terrorist attack”.  The officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame, succumbed to his injuries Saturday. With this the casualties in this siege has grown to four.

A 45-year-old Lt-Col Arnaud Beltrame had rushed to the siege site along with other officers in the town of Trebes in southwest France on Friday as the terrorist, claiming affiliation to the ISIS, had entered a supermarket and fired at people and staff at the supermarket.

The officer had offered to take place of a woman the attacker had held hostage. In this process he was shot and seriously injured before anti-terror cops killed the gunman.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb announced on his Twitter account, “Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame has passed away. He died for his country. France will never forget his heroism.”

President Emmanuel Macron said in a TV address to the nation, “Our country has suffered an Islamist terrorist attack,” after the siege ended.

ISIS claimed the attack was in response to its call to target Western enemies — as is customary when the assailant has pledged allegiance to the terrorists, NDTV reported.

Over 50 people were there in the supermarket when the gunmen held them hostage. While some managed to escape, many others remained inside the supermarket.

Lt-Col Beltrame had offered to take the place of a woman Lakdim was using as a shield as his fellow officers negotiated with the attacker. “The officer left his telephone on the table” to allow police who had surrounded the building to listen in,” Interior Minister Gerard Collomb was quoted as having said by NDTV.

When security officials heard sound of bullets they entered the store, killing the gunman and recovering officer Beltrame, who had been critically injured and was bleeding profusely. He had been shot twice and many times stabbed by the gunman.
